Japan suspends whaling under pressure from environmentalists

Japan has decided to suspend the annual season of whaling in the Antarctic Ocean after an environmental group with a boat chasing to the mother ship of the fleet. Tatsuya Nakaoku of Fisheries Agency has justified that "security is a priority."

"The fleet of scientific whaling has been suspended for now. We are currently considering what to do in the future," he added. The authorities are not ruling ordering the fleet to return to Japanese ports, while Nakaoku has said that Tokyo will not give up easily on whaling.

The fleet, composed of 180 employees in four boats, wanted to get up to 850 minke whales in March, when the season ends. In the same period last year gave chase to 506 of these specimens, although the target was also set at 850.

few months ago claimed Australia to Japan to the International Court of Justice, based in The Hague to stop its activities in the Antarctic Ocean, but is not expected that the international body take a decision before 2013.

Activist Society for Conservation and Protection of the Sea campaigner, was sentenced to two years in prison in July on board a ship used for hunting. Last year, a group of vessels sank after colliding with another ship.

The Japanese government uses the scientific whaling to avoid the moratorium imposed in 1986 and argues it is entitled to examine the impact of whales on its fishing industry. Japan is one of the three countries in the world who hold this activity, of great value in their culture.
