research expedition in the Amazon found a species of monkey previously unknown size of a cat. The animal belongs to the family of marmoset monkeys (Callicebus), of which about 20 known species. For many years, it was possible to travel through the area in which these animals are the presence of rebel groups in the jungle. Just three years ago, researchers were able to reach the region with a student born in the place, Javier García. There, they found 13 groups of marmosets Caqueta. "The discovery is very interesting, because we had heard of this animal but could not confirm long when it was a new species, "said one of the leaders of the expedition, Thomas Defler.
The researchers, led by Defler and Marta Bueno of the National University of Colombia, called the new species, Callicebus caquetensis as Callicebus is the scientific name for the squirrel monkey and Caqueta is the Colombian department in which it was found.
