The European Space Agency has just released the global land cover map for 2009, which is publicly available on the website GlobCover. This work is the sharpest global map of vegetation cover available, created in the space of a year.

The map has been produced with 12 months of data Resolution Imaging Spectrometer aboard Media European satellite Envisat, with a resolution of 300 eters.

ESA and Catholic University of Leuven uitlizando created the map software developed by Brockmann Consult the Franco-German firm, recogiod data from 1 January to 31 December 2009. GlobCover 2009 was generated during the year following the acquisition of data.

The map legend is based on the use of the United Nations agency Food and Agriculture (FAO).

Some 8,000 people have downloaded the previous version, GlobCover 2005. These maps are useful for studying the effects of climate change, biodiversity conservation and natural resource management.
